Are touch points really the key or is it not the contact points. Touch is volitional in that there is a preceeding mind phenomena. On the other hand contact arises from the confluence of three things, the consciousness of five cords or agencies, the object and the physical agent, the eye or ear etc.
The touch and contact are therefore quite apart from each other in terms of volition.
Brands become unique not purely on account of touch points therefore but on account of contact points as well as the feeling/perception it generates.

Tom, Southwest Airlines is a great case study. And you wonder how many corporations have a "big board" on which they track the status of the brand and the changes in tech, media and marketplace to which you refer. When do we get systematic about this? Thanks, Grant

Great post Grant! Thanks. Especially "the brand is a collection of meanings that must be constantly renewed, burnished, balanced, and when necessary rotated." Change - in technoglogy, media, and in the marketplace - creates change in brand meaning.
I was thinking about Southwest Airlines "brand" meaning the other day. Prior to the disruptions in on-time departures and arrivals caused by impending bankruptcies of the legacy carriers, SWA meant cheap. But now, it should gently raise prices and promote its reliability. Time to rotate!

Steve, thanks a million. Grant
Matt, yes, normally, I prefer to think of myself as the King of France, but they don't yet make a Mercedes for that. Grant
