I like the NYY without being a huge fan. But you're right that NYY fans have a sense of entitlement like none other in sports. A few years back, ESPN's sports magazine ran a piece entitled "The Yankees' 730-day World Series drought continues."
You counldn't write that about any other team anywhere.
Unless you're writing about the Cubs and the their century-long WS drought and then you're clearly trying to be funny. NYY are never philosophical when october rolls around their team is not playing the series.

The generalizations regarding Yankees fans are as grating to me as those regarding Italians...one of the few ethnic groups (besides Canadians!) it's still OK to stereotype with impunity.
Some of us have tasted misery...this season stings pointedly because of the team's performance through some pretty tough times. To remind anyone who cares, we haven't won anything for six years. That doesn't mean I believe there's entitlement, just that it hurts to get close six times in a row and not win. And, to boot, two of those losses involved rather historic collapses (2004 and this year.) I think that qualifies as, at least, mini-misery!
The Yanks were at their best this year when scrapping, seen at its height in the ecstasy-inducing five-game massacre of those paragons of sportsmanship and civility from Beantown. The post-season collapse didn't induce anger in me, just a wistful sadness. I love what Jim Leyland's done with the Tigers (he's an old Pirate, so I have a real affinity for him) but I sure the pinstripers would have played up to their potential.

"Oh, somewhere in this favored land the sun is shining bright,
The band is playing somewhere, and somewhere hearts are light,
And somewhere men are laughing, and little children shout;"
Yes, indeed. Right here in Beantown! For the mighty Yankees have struck out . . . again. ;)
