As for the contrast with &quot;authenticity,&quot; by my reading it is similar to what you suggest, but not exactly the same: the difference is not so much about whether one is playing a role or expressing their true self but about how weird or quirky that true self is, with authentic carrying the implication of a little strange--there is an overlap obviously, since we might tend to assume that the more weird someone is the more we are seeing their true self.  But (assuming she is not in fact a total diva) the word &quot;authentic&quot; might apply better to, say, Angelina Jolie.
