so i would guess that with the pre-ww1 instability, with the ww1 instability, and with the post-ww1 instability in the area around grafenstein the schoenwalds sensed that the trouble in europe would not be over yet.
right they were.
and i guess they were looking for a bigger place with more political stability to built a life based on their education and personal capabilities rather than being the toy ball of forces that were not theirs to control.

let me quickly help you out as a german native speaker.
the name of the town 'Guafenstein' is a misprint too. it should rather be 'Grafenstein'.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grafenstein
on more click takes us to Kaernten in Austria http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carinthia_(state)
were we learn: "After the end of the First World War southern Carinthia was occupied by troops of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes (later Yugoslavia) under colonel Rudolf Maister leading to clashes of arms and violent fights. The Carinthian Plebiscite on October 10, 1920 determined the lines of division between what is today the Austrian state of Carinthia and the informal province of Carinthia (Koroška) within Slovenia."
