A comment, long after the interest in this post has moved on …
Having moved south of the Mason-Dixon and then on to the desert Southwest, I describe myself as a "recovering New Englander," coming from, arguably, the oldest town in Connecticut. Because, in Connecticut, you argue about those sorts of things. It's a great place to be _from_.
One of my favorite descriptions came from a friend in college (from New Jersey, IIRC), upon first meeting me: "Connecticut … wasn't that just completely redone in white wicker? You have to leave your shoes in New York?"
This arrived from my parents -- both former Travelers employees -- today; it actually isn't funny: http://www.courant.com/features/hc-humor-jokes-thedot0503.artmay03,0,7109174.story
Go, you huskies!

This has to be one of your funniest posts. We are, indeed, America's Switzerland. Almost snarfed my coffee at the recycling observation. Good luck with the garbage can.

http://www.hulu.com/watch/67442/saturday-night-live-update-celebrity-blogger
When the obsolete entertainment-form and the adolescent critic engage in mutually assured discreditable confrontation,
only celebrated celebrity soldiers on, unless you don't know of, sneer at or love Zac Efron.
Amazingly, I just learned from IMDb that Zachary David Alexander Efron played young Simon Tam in THE most revelatory episode of Firefly, Safe.
(I still maintain that Gabriel Tam was wearing a BlueSun tiepin the evening after the board meeting when young River envisoned Reavers.)
Now I, too, love that guy!
