Yes, it appears strange that Nike has not woken up to the possibility of forming a social network group. This group would be a very linked one since it would have members from many age groups. Also members would probably physically meet which would make it a tightly bonded group. Some officers in Nike are obviously oblivious to the possibilities.

Try runnerplus.com. You can use your nike+ data, but it provides the social aspects that nike+ lacks.

Nike's website certainly has issues but I think some of what you're looking for is there. You can issue a cooperative "team challenge", e.g. Reach 100 miles collective by
I have also participate in "Us vs. Them" challenges like; State / School (I've done both) with the most miles.
It's not really "social" but you can also create a Nike+ avatar and add him / her to your facebook page. As your run miles you're supposed to be able to acquire more gear to outfit it in.
I'd love for them to flesh out the social side more (and add some "handicapping" #'s since my wife clobbers me in every challenge) but as you said, it motivates more then it de-motivates and anything to keep me running is good.

How cool would it be to trade miles like energy? I'll purchase your miles from you and in turn I will sit on the couch and pretend I ran.

They might be slowly catching up: http://tinyurl.com/cw7nju
But I guess it's still not the full social specter you are talking about. And it's still mainly about competition (albeit a generalized and genderdized). I thought it was "Just do it", not "Just win it".

"Beat them in 2009" and Nike will donate $0.0001/mile to the worthy cause of your (collective) choice;
which incentivizes socialized (preventive) medicine, meet-ups and affinity-migrations. I think the idea
is so exceptionally great that it ought to exceed the constraints of branding; walking/running not only
in pursuit of heart-healthy self-interest, but to serve a socially-transformative, consensual purpose.
THIS is what Forrest Gump should have been about.
