Microsoft and the evolutionary future of on-line advertising

Google_ad_1

Microsoft is getting serious about on-line advertising.  So the titans mean to tangle.  That’s Google in the blue spandex.  Microsoft in the red.  Stay well clear of the mat, ladies and gentlemen!  This is going to get ugly.

I think Microsoft could win this one.  Clearly, they want to.  Joanne Bradford, corporate VP of global sales and marketing at Microsoft, says that the Internet ad biz, now worth $13 billion, will grow to $100 billion in 10 years.

It won’t be easy.  At the moment, Microsoft is playing catch up.  Their ad revenue grew only 7 % last quarter while Google’s grew 80%.  (Yahoo grew 38%).

The problem is the MSN search engine.   It gets only 13% of our search inquiries while Google gets 45%.  (Yahoo gets 28%.)  By sewing up our searches (and, for some of us, our email), Google effectively owns the "billboards" on which internet ads appear.

Microsoft means to address this with by creating an "adCenter" designed to give better demographic targeting and the opportunity to put ads not just on searches, but free online software services, gaming and cell phones.

But the anthropological observation is clear.  Microsoft could win because they actually know something about advertising.  They have commissioned good advertising.  They have managed good advertising.

Google has demonstrated a naiveté about advertising.  Their success came to them without advertising.  So they have no real world experience of what it is and why it matters.  Plus, I think they made the classic error of the quantitatively gifted.  They have looked at advertising and asked "how hard can this be?"

They are about to find out.  And if they lose a $100 billion contest to Microsoft, naiveté (nee arrogance) in these matters will finally have a price tag.

Here’s the swing assumption.  I am betting that advertising will undergo a rapid evolution in the next few years.  It will get richer, more complex, more persuasive.  It will evolve to capture the opportunities made available by the net and the competition that $100 billion will bring to the market.

Right now, a Google ad is not much better than a newspaper classified.  It is a line or two.  No images, no music, no mystery, no power.  A 30 second spot on television can move us to tears or laughter.  A classified ad catchs our attention only if we happen to be searching for the 86 Chevy it has on offer.  Classified ads are the penny dreadfuls of the advertising world.  Advertising will begin to evolve away from this model at speed.

Classified are merely, thinly, informational.  (Real advertising helps construct the product by supplying deeper information, rules of use, and meanings mined from emotion, cognition and culture. ) Google’s approach is pallid.  Proof?  When was the last time you clicked on a Google ad?  Our eyes have learned to edit-out Google advertising.  All my search activity and email contains Google ads, and I have clicked on Google advertising perhaps twice in the last 3 months.  How about you?

Online advertising is going to evolve ferociously in the next ten years.   We will move to the incorporation of movement, sounds, color, image, transmedia, cocreation, narrative, the whole flaming ball of wax.  Eventually, the internet will sustain a species of advertising that makes the present 30 second spot on television look like child’s play.  Ilya Vedrashko, my colleague at MIT’s C3 is particularly good on the 3D future of the internet, and when this is installed, Google’s undernourishing notion of advertising will be laid bare, and Microsoft will sweep this contest.

Of course, Google could take a crash course.  They could throw themselves at the feet of the great agencies and supplant naivete with sophistication.  They could hire Russell Davies, Ilya Vedrashko, or some other leading light.  They could investigate what advertising is when it isn’t a classified.  This could happen.  Sure, it could.

Do I click on ads? Um, heh heh well no. But I am not your target audience either, Grant. I don’t buy hardly nothing. Most purchases if it is recylced though, my dream home is a tipi, I don’t eat in franchises, or never even walked in the door of a Gap (why buy new clothes that look like they came from a second hand store, might as well buy second hand) I think marketers should channel their desperate wallflower energy to market world peace and save the women in Darfur. They have the connections. I think most people who buy new products more than 50% of their posessions are chumps and deserve to be in debt. I like good ads though, like most people, and what you describe sounds like a fun civil battlezone to watch go down.

Almost everyone says that ads don’t work on them. Especially cynical, sneering, middle-class milquetoasts like myself. But I seem to have ended up with a bunch of things I don’t need.

For many companies, it doesn’t matter that their ads aren’t clicked on. Just the fact that you type in ‘new car’ in Google and Vauxhall (GM in the US) appears gives them a presence and an authority.

Microsoft? Good advertising? Sorry, I must have missed it. Compared to Apple Microsoft too have a good deal to learn.

Google Ads? Twice in the last year- tops!

  4. Matt

When was the last time you bought something you didn’t intend to buy, because of a TV ad?

Clicked on google ads? Um…probably five or six times so far this month. (And it’s only the 9th.) They’re certainly a lot more relevant to my life than advertising on TV. (Yeah, I tape the superbowl just to watch the ads. They’re entertaining. But that doesn’t mean I’m gonna _buy_ any of that stuff. So as commercial prospects, they’re failures for me.)

I’m less sanguine about Microsoft’s chances. Sure, MS has taken out advertising, but selling advertising is a new business for them.

More generally, this seems to be an example of the now-classic Microsoft paranoia that every successful technology company is a Microsoft competitor. Sony succeeds with the PS2? Microsoft must compete in the console market! Google succeeds by selling online ads? Microsoft must compete in the online ad market!

I hear that Toyota has been successful selling cars. That means Microsoft should compete in the car market! (Gods forbid.)

Selling online ads is not among Microsoft’s core competencies. That alone does not condemn their effort, but IMO the fact that they’re so clearly reacting to Google indicates that this new business model hasn’t been thought through. It smells of strategic desperation.

People tune out ALL ads that aren’t relevant to them. The ads that we watch that make us laugh or cry (but not buy) are usually for things we desire but can’t afford. The rest, well, I just change the channel.

Google ads are relevant and timely – ie they appear when we are looking for that category which they are advertising. I have often clicked on them, usually not disappointed.

I do believe that your point about 3-D environments is noteworthy. Many firms will find it easy and useful to create 3-D representations of their offerings, making for some very interesting communication campaigns. However, it will still take a Google to direct us there.

Well, I don’t know if I have ever bought anything I didn’t need, either from an ad or period. Well, maybe when I was 18 I was kinda addicted to buying chic clothing but I realized I can put together chic clothing in a different way original and cheap and recyled…I liike to be comfortable and homey like everyone but I don’t find that there is much in the physical world that feeds the actual craving people have when they desire those expensive products. If you talk to impulse shoppers, and god knows a lot of my gal pals have suffered fromt hat and actually guys…suddenly buying a citizen watch because they felt like James Bond, to get home and feel really depressed and down, women buying prada shoes then get home and feeling empty and deranged. Lonely withdrawal etc. ha ha. So its sad really. I find families, and lots of them in blogland that have discovered NOT buying and spending has changed their entire lives, they hang out with each other more often play with the kids they found on so many levels their life changed when they made a pledge to not buy anything for six months aside from food and emergency supplies(aspirin socks) They found they didn’t use half the stuff they already owned and landed up having garage sales and organizing their house so they were even more happy with less clutter.

Now, I admit I did see some ads recently that I really liked…lets see I’ll try to add them here…warning I am a nerd these aren’t as sexy as ads about beer although, I suppose I enjoy beer ads, I’m canadian after all. But I never drink beer that is advertised on tv. Boring! Who drink corporate beer…oh rats I drink heneken and Stella if I’m in a fix, wellsee there ya go.

here…I loved the ad on side for the bag attached to eaves pipes. I thought that was cool. I liked the flip flops too.

Not quite an “ad” but it is packaging, which is sort of an ad
    http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=4313772690011721857&q=ipod+packaging

of course, it is on “google”.
I was surprised to go to
    http://www.apple.com
recently to have it start with an ad.
Of course, they might no longer be there now but they are still here
    http://www.apple.com/getamac/ads/

I’ve been traveling a bit so haven’t seen these. I have to admit I watched all of them, and a couple of them more than once 🙂
Sent them to friends too, most of them are mac owners at this point though . . .

  9. ken

OH, the one guy, on the viewers left, in the Apple ads looks a little like Bill Gates, which is why I mentioned them. Of course someone will undoubtedly bring up the Apple PC share is somewhere in the same neighborhood as the BMW car share – so where has advertising got them (well, OK, then there is the stock price comparison . . .)
Good brand image and recognition, plus 2.95$ will get you a good cup of coffee. 🙂
(Full disclosure – yes I have 4 Apple laptops and 4 ipods in my house of 4 people but really, it wasn’t the advertising 🙂 )

  10. Candy Minx

Ken, your “disclosure” just cracked me up you’re a riot. 4 computers, wow. I just got a computer for the first time my boyfriend and I just got it in Feb. And I’m old its like weird I never had one, I’ve been on bbs and “electronic mail” for twenty years, harvard paleontolgy (ape feuds central) bbs and used puters through universities and military and public all these years. I am like a mennonite when I shop…analyse the whole how many machines do I want in my house etc. I hate vaccuums and dishwashers and microwaves! I’m not a Luddite, just like a minimum of possessions left over from when I was hooked up with the Dalai Lama, that pirate! and like to live thin. More possessions means more housework and slaving for “the man” heh heh but true. But I bet your family is nice and peaceful and gets along like a charm since you’re not competeing for ‘puter time. Those mac commercials are delightful and yes he does look like Bill Gates. I think you might be onto something Ken with the cup of coffee idea. I wonder how much brand image does matter sometimes…because with something like BMW…what caused it to be the representative of all that is evil in the world?(nazis, corporate whores, yuppies, self serving drivers, ) They became this symbol in the 80’s right? It wasn’t throguh ads was it and I missed something…? And why on earth would any human drive one and associate themselves with all that evil and lack of imagination? If I was a business executive I would not hire anyone who drove a bmw, sign of YAWN!

    i like google’s ads.

when i’m contemplating a purchase and use google to do research, i often click the ads they steer my way. but not when i’m using google to locate info that has nothing to do with buying anything.

which makes google’s ads so very different from ads in a shelter magazine or in vanity fair, where they’re so well-executed that i rather enjoy reading them. as a general rule, google’s ads interest me only in terms of price and ease of purchase, with an ad from vanity fair, say, being the reason i’m interested in the product/service in the first place.

amazing that grant’s musings on advertising and its role in our lives attracts readers who claim not to be big consumers and/or who claim not to be influenced by advertising.

I’m a bit of a skeptic on most advertising. It’s effectiveness is hard to verify, and the few scientific attempts to do so have come up with uncomfortable results. On the other hand, firms don’t have many other choices for attracting attention, and for new products or services advertising is an unparalleled way to spread awareness.

Google’s lack of expertise in creating ad copy need have no bearing on their ability to provide a technology platform to those who do. What does Google have to do with the content of current Google ads? Basically, nothing, as far as I can tell. Advertisers decide what to put in the space available.

More intrusive, dynamic visual advertising on the internet also may be a pipe dream. Unlike TV, which is a passive medium where we “see what’s on,” the computer is a controlled window on cyberspace where we search for things of interest. The last thing most people want is to have their intended views obstructed or distracted from by intrusive ads. If I had some kind of multimedia extravaganza going off on the side of this blog (or, even worse, blocking the text for 30 seconds), I would find it an annoyance and would be less likely to come back.

I’m not convinced that the old rules of marketing will necessarily apply in this postulated future internet. It’s my impression that the traditional media and marketing companies are really in a crisis right now figuring out how to transition to forms of marketing that take advantage of the low transaction costs and high diversity of a long tail internet economy. Google’s Adsense is proof that they know how to capitalize on this market. As applied auction theory, Adsense is a fundamentally new way to think about marketing.
