Gwen Stefani with her newfangled Nobel

stefani.jpg

This proposition just in from Gwen Stefani:

na-na-na na na naaa
na-na-na na na naaa
na-na-na na na na na na na na na naaa
na-na-na na na naaa
na-na-na na na naaa
na-na-na na na na na na na na na naaa

If I was a Rich Girl
na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-naaa
See, I’d have all the money in the world…

So the lead singer for No Doubt has an interest in economics, go figure! I’m not sure what she’s getting at with this formula, but then I’m an untutored anthropologist.

Still, it is a striking proposition, and, as even an anthropologist can see, an intriguing new theory of value.

I find it incredibly courageous for Gwen to have embraced Fiddler on the Roof. Yes, the original song is good, but it is by no means great–certainly from a melodic/hip-hop standpoint. I was absolutely incredulous when I first heard the remix–I couldn’t believe that Gwen would associate herself with this culture–it seemed way more a Barbra Streisand sort of thing! But that is actually what I like most about Ms. Stefani–I sorta shake my head, while I smile…and tap my feet.

Not that suprising to me. Gwen has done reggae stuff with No Doubt before, “Underneath it all comes to mind.”

Michie One and Louchie Lou did a reggae version about 10 years ago of the classic fiddler and the roof song. Most recently Lady Saw did a version in either in 2004 or 2005. Dr. Dre has previously done beats based on the reggae tradition including “Blow Ya Mind” which featured Eve with Gwen Stefani. Blow Ya Mind is a slight variation of an old Dennis Brown beat (I can’t remember the title).

This “rich girl” is all new to me but i definitely prefer the Lady Saw version. I think Gwen has a tendency to commit herself to lousy cover versions. “It’s my life” is still alot better with Talk Talk

    But that’s just my opinion

GWEN’S VERSION OF “…RICH GIRL” IS EXACTLY THE SAME AS LOUCHIE LOU AND MICHIE ONE’S VERSION SAVE EVE’S RAP. (THOUGH I AM YET TO HEAR LADY SAW’S VERSION)
I’M SORRY, I AM YET TO HEAR A SONG BY GWEN THAT IS GOOD. THAT DOESN’T CHANGE THE FACT THAT PEOPLE LOVE HER MUSIC. I WISH HER THE BEST BUT I AM JUST TIRED OF SUB-STANDARD ARTISTS RIPPING OFF OTHER PEOPLE’S MUSIC AND NOT MAKING IT SOUND ANY BETTER THAN THE ORIGINAL. E.G. – BRITNEY SPEARS COVER OF “MY PREROGATIVE” WHICH EVEN BOBBY BROWN DISSED ON JIMMY KIMMEL LIVE.

she used to be an artist, but
she became a pathetic, insignificant lip-syncher,
    an aging, wannabe popstar

fake singing, fake boobs, fake music
